Genre: Thriller / Drama

Cast: Merritt Wever, Thomasin McKenzie, Shea Whigham, Mikael Persbrandt, Ben McKenzie, Betsy Brandt, Sunny Suljic, Alistair Petrie, David Denman and Ross O'Henessy
Plot: Jimmy (Sunny Suljic) is reluctantly
following the trail of blood left behind by the deer his mother killed,
although he doesn’t know that yet, he still has no idea where he is. Bernhard
(Mikael Persbrandt) and Lars (Ross O’Hennessy) keep pushing him so he’ll keep
up with them. Bernhard tells Jimmy that’s why people should cover their tracks,
but Jimmy doesn’t listen to him anymore. He stopped looking at a particular
tree, so majestic he’d never mistake it for another tree. He realises where he
is now, he has seen this tree before, the exact same one. He’s headed back
home. He tries to run away, but Bernhard catches him and he asks him why he
tried to run away and Jimmy doesn’t answer. Bernhard asks Lars to keep an eye
on him until they reach their destination.
Not far away, Emily (Thomasin McKenzie)
walks in her house with a candle. She enters her mom’s room and finds the box of
pictures and she starts looking at them. She sees her parents when they were
young and they met. Her father was so handsome, all her friends kept telling
her so back when life was normal. In a flashback sequence, we see the whole
family playing a board game all together, people were happy, Emily was smiling.
She sheds a tear remembering these old times, asking herself when is her life
be back to the way it was. She misses her father, she misses Jimmy and she
misses her friends, god knows where they are now. She’s brought back to reality
by Bernhard, standing in the door frame, asking her if she misses them. Emily
starts screaming and tries to run past him and he tells her it’s all for
nothing, nobody’s going to hear her and nobody’s going to save her. She screams
for Alice to come help her, but Alice is far away from home.
In fact, Alice (Merritt Wever) is holding
on tight to Frank (Shea Whigham) as they ride his snowmobile. His tracks are
still visible on the ground, making it easier for him to find the buildings
again. She asks him again what he found, and he says he found rows of building,
with big lights and alarms, all that sort of things. Wherever people they love
are taken, it must be there. He gets all excited when he sees the spotlight and
this time, he stops before the fence. They get off the snowmobile and crouch
down in the snow, spying with their binoculars. Alice says it’s worthless,
she’s going in through the hole in fence made by Frank earlier. Frank says it’s
a bad idea, but Alice is already past the fence. Frank tells her to not get in
trouble and he’ll stay here, in case they need to leave in a hurry.
Inside the buildings, Richard (Alistair
Petrie) is called to the surveillance room and he takes a look at the cameras. He
asks his man if he confirms it’s the same guy from earlier and he says it is. He
says a woman came with him this time and she entered the premises. He switches
the infrared mode off and prints a picture of Alice from the footage. He grabs
the picture and leaves and he says to get him if they leave and to keep watching
him in case he tries to do something.
Outside his own home, Jimmy screams,
trying to get his sister to answer, because he hasn’t heard a thing since
Bernhard got inside. He asks Lars if he can get inside, but he says he would
never allow it, he knows damn well where they are. He takes a group of men,
including Jimmy and they break into Frank’s house.
Inside, Emily is nervously shaking as
Bernhard is sitting next to her on Alice’s bed. Emily breaks the silence and
she asks if he’s going to force himself on her and Bernhard says he’s many
things, but he’s not a sexual predator. She asks him why he’s doing this to
people, scare them like that and stealing their things. Bernhard says he’s mostly
misunderstood. He isn’t some kind of thug, he’s building a community, he’s
bringing people together so they can have a normal life. Emily says he’s not
bringing people together, he’s kidnapping them so he has more thugs to steal
from people. Bernhard touches her on the shoulder and she gets away from him.
She uses the opportunity to go in the kitchen. Used to her home, she’s able to
run in the dark with ease, as opposed to Bernhard. She grabs a kitchen knife
and hides under the table. When Bernhard gets close to her, she stabs him in
the leg twice and he tumbles to the ground, screaming in pain. Emily runs outside
and screams her brother’s name, in case he hears her. Jimmy hears her, but he’s
held by Lars, so he can’t answer. Bernhard is now back up and swears revenge on
Emily, so she runs away in the woods behind the house.
Justine (Betsy Brandt) comes back in her cell
and she sees Spencer (Ben McKenzie) telling her not to say a word. He lifts his
mattress up and he hid a gun underneath. She asks him how he managed to get a
hold of that and as he’s trying to tell her, Richard arrives in their cell’s
row and bangs on the bars with his cane. Everyone heads out and he says they’ve
been chosen to do a clean sweep of the buildings. They are looking for what may
be a threat to the establishment and everything it represents. They want her
alive, so if they find her, they must report her to his office. He gives them a
picture each. Spencer’s jaw drops to the floor when he recognizes Alice.
Alice is careful when walking around the
buildings. She opens a door and finds herself in the canteen. She walks amongst
the food and grabs some off the table as she goes in another room, wondering where
she is. She hears people talking in another room and she sees a room full of people
doing yoga, as if nothing is happening. She walks in a corridor and looks at
the closed doors, wondering where she’s going to happen next. She hears people
coming and she hides in a room with no one in it. She takes a look at the
people who came her way and recognizes Spencer. She carefully opens the door
and stands in the corridor behind them, as he gets further away from her.
Outside, Frank is sitting on the
snowmobile, looking at the horizon, his back turned from the buildings. A commando
of men, led by Chris (David Denman) is slowly getting closer to Frank with guns
in their hands. They pass through the hole in the fence and pin Frank to the
ground.
Emily is seen
breathing heavily in the woods, with nowhere to go. She looks around her and
she has no idea where she is, but she knows she’s still close to home. She
looks back behind her and she sees she left a trail in the snow.
