L.A. Noire 1.5 - The Driver's Seat

L.A. Noire - The Driver's Seat
Genre: Crime
Director: Gavin O'Connor
Writer: John Malone
Based on the video game
Cast: Joe Alwyn, Eric Ladin, Bill Burr, Cole Hauser, Bob Stephenson, Michael Mosley, Jordan Gelber, Mark Pellegrino, Joshua Leonard and Keegan Connor Tracy

Plot: 1947 - Cole Phelps (Joe Alwyn) arrives at the Central Police Station in a new, pressed suit for his first day as a detective. He is greeted by the precinct's Watch Commander Mel Fleischer (Bob Stephenson), who happily begins giving Phelps a tour of the station. Fleischer takes him through to the building to his desk in the Traffic Division. On the way hangs a large poster of the Master Plan of Metropolitan Los Angeles Freeways. Phelps comments that he wishes they'd build a freeway next to his house. Fleischer says that they haven't even approved the money for the freeway yet and that the bond measure won't be till December - it will be years before any of it actually comes about. Fleischer then introduces Phelps to his new partner Detective Stefan Bekowsky (Eric Ladin), who says as long as Phelps goes easy on his and lets him earn the odd citation, they'll get along fine. Detective Roy Earle (Cole Hauser) comes through the office and introduces himself to Phelps. Earle says he'll have to keep an eye on Phelps based on what he's heard. Earle then walks away. Fleischer tells Phelps that Earle is the chief Ad Vice detective.

Phelps follows Bekowsky into the briefing room where he is welcomed by the sardonic Captain Gordon Leary (Bill Burr), who informs the rest of the room that Phelps is one of only two serving LAPD officers who received the Silver Star during the war. Leary tells Phelps to stick with Bekowsky - he's a good cop and he knows Traffic inside and out. Leary says he'll give him one case. If he does well he'll get a couple more. If Phelps screws up, Leary says he will have him rousting vagrants and runnin license plates. Leary tells Phelps and Bekowsky to get down to the PE Freight Depot. A patrolman called in a suspicious vehicle with signs of foul play.

When they arrive at the depot, the Officer Ralph Dunn (Michael Mosley) is on the scene. He informs them that the car is registered to an Adrian Black and is full of blood, but not body. Phelps heads over to the car where he finds County Coroner Malcolm Carruters (Jordan Gelber) taking a look at the copious amounts of blood in the car. Phelps looks through a wallet found in the car. It belongs to Adrian Black. Near the car there is a bloody pipe, but Carruthers comments that there seems to be too much blood to have been caused by any sort of blunt force trauma. Bekowsky opens up the trunk of the car and calls Phelps over. Bekowsky found a receipt in the trunk made out to "F. Morgan" for the purchase of one live hog.

Phelps and Bekowsky drive to Adrian Black's house to speak to his wife. When they walk up to the door, Bekowsky tells Phelps to go ahead and do the talking. Bekowsky says he's no good at the shoulder to cry on stuff. They knock on the door and Margaret Black (Keegan Connor Tracy) answers. Phelps tells her they have some bad news for her and ask to come inside. Once inside, Phelps informs her that Adrian's car was found abandoned and there are signs of foul play. She says she was worried when he didn't come home last night. Phelps asks Margaret if it would be alright if he and his partner had a look around the house for a few minutes. Margaret says that would be fine, anything to help find her husband. Near an ashtray Phelps finds a matchbook from Cavanagh's Bar. Bekowsky surmises that Adrian could have been a regular if he's bringing home matchbooks. In a closet Phelps finds a used train ticket to Seattle, but doesn't find a suitcase, which he finds suspicious. Phelps and Bekowsky sit back down with Margaret and ask her if she knows a "F. Morgan". She says that would be Frank Morgan, Adrian's up to no good drinking buddy. Bekowsky asks if Adrian frequents Cavanagh's Bar, and she says that he practically lives there after work. Phelps asks if Adrian said where he was going the night before, and she says that all he said was that he was going out for a drink with Frank. Phelps tells Margaret that they'll keep her informed on the case and thank her for her time and assistance. As Phelps and Bekowsky get into the car to check out the bar, Bekowsky says he doesn't think Margaret was involved in whatever happened. She just doesn't seem the type. Phelps agrees with him.

Phelps and Bekowsky arrive at Cavanagh's Bar. They asks the bartender for Frank Morgan. The bartender points to the corner of the room. They sit down at the table in front of Frank Morgan (Mark Pellegrino). Phelps asks him if he'd heard that Adrian has gone missing. Morgan says that's too bad - Adrian was a good boss. Phelps tells him that they found Adrian's car abandoned, covered in blood, and they believe Morgan was involved. Morgan laughs and tells them to prove it. Phelps mentions that they have a receipt in the trunk with his name on it. Morgan gives up and tells the detectives that Adrian fell in love with some broad in Seattle and asked for Morgan's help to make it look like he'd been attacked. Bekowsky thanks Morgan for his cooperation and asks where Adrian Black is hiding out. At first Morgan claims Adrian took off for Seattle, but quickly reveals that Adrian is hiding out at his place until he gets some money together.

Phelps and Bekowsky knock on Morgan's door, and Adrian Black (Joshua Leonard) answers. Phelps greets Black and tells him he's under arrest. Adrian apologizes, saying he never wanted to hurt anyone, he just needed to get away from L.A. Adrian tries to escape out a window, but falls and lands in a bush down below. Bekowsky and Phelps run outside and find him still struggling to get out of the bush that broke his fall. Phelps cuffs Adrian, telling him he is under arrest for conspiracy and fraud. Bekowsky says that Adrian is going to lose his wife, his job and probably end up in the big house. He says he hopes the dame in Seattle was worth all that.

Back at the Central station, Captain Leary comments on what an idiot Adrian Black was, but commends Phelps for getting an arrest and a clearance in his first case in the division.

Have Gun - Will Travel 1.5 - Chan

Have Gun - Will Travel : Chan
Genre: Western
Director: Frank Darabont
Writer: Dwight Gallo
Based on the television series
Cast: Walton Goggins, Benedict Wong, Adrianne Palicki, Ben Cross, Luke Kirby, David Caruso, Jason Scott Lee, Julia Ling, Richard Brake and Ken Hudson Campbell

Plot: Paladin (Walton Goggins) returns to the Hotel Charlemagne and sits down in the cafe area and waits for Chan to come with his daily coffee and the newspaper. Helena Pervis (Adrianne Palicki) greets him and says it's been a while. Paladin concurs, but is obviously getting impatient without his coffee and newspaper. After waiting a while, Paladin gets up and goes to see Charlemagne (Ben Cross) in his office. Paladin asks him where Chan is, but Charlemagne doesn't know and says that Chan has not come in for work the last couple days. Concerned, Paladin asks Charlemagne for Chan's home address.

When Paladin arrives at Chan's apartment, no one answers the door. He leaves and a young Chinese woman, Kim Li (Julia Ling) emerges. She walks to the Mandarin Galleries Chinese import shop, unaware that Paladin is following her. The owner of the shop, Wei Chung (Jason Scott Lee), escorts Kim in and has her go into the back of the store. Paladin comes in and looks through the shop's wares, then asks Wei Chung for information on Chan. Wei Chung says he hasn't seen Chan recently. Paladin then heads into the back of the store, against the protests of Wei Chung. He invites the girl to come out of hiding, announcing that he knows she is Chan's sister.

Frank Pervis (Luke Kirby) sits at a bar across from Paul Pilate (David Caruso). Pervis asks what it is Pilate is seeking to hire him to do. Pilate asks Pervis to be his eyes and ears inside the Hotel Charlemagne, especially in relation to the comings and goings of Paladin. Pervis says that Pilate is asking a lot of him, and Pilate tells him he will be handsomely rewarded.

Wei Chung tells Paladin that Chan is looking for his brother Sung. The family had to borrow money to come to China, and Kim Li entered into a marriage arrangement with an elderly merchant to pay off her debt. The railroad company paid to bring Sun over in return fora contract of employment. Sung informed Chan that the superintendent of the railroad has been cheating the Chinese workers out of their wages, and not long later Chan received a letter informing him of Sung's death in a railroad accident. Chan was furious and headed out to locate the superintendent, Maury Travis, to find out what really happened.

Frank Pervis visits his wife Helena at the Hotel Charlemagne. She's excited to see him after another long business trip. They have sex in their room. Afterward, Helena tells Frank that she wants to have a baby. He tells her that a hotel is no place to raise a baby. Helena gets frustrated and gets out of bed. She says that he had promised her that the stay at the Hotel Charlemagne was meant to be temporary while he made hay while the sun shined and saved up enough money. Frank gets up too and starts getting dressed. He changes the subject and asks if she has seen Paladin around the hotel lately. She tells him that he's been away, but was back at the hotel earlier that day for a while. Frank asks if she knows if he's around currently. She says she thinks he left town again for business, or at least went out to blow off some steam after Chan never brought him any coffee. She asks why Frank cares so much about Paladin all of a sudden, and Frank tells her he was simply hoping to conduct some business with him.

Paladin travels to the railroad line outside Sacramento where he visits Travis' office. He looks on as Maury Travis (Richard Brake) tells his foreman Brady (Ken Hudson Campbell) to force the workers onto the next shift to make up for lost time. Travis then notices Paladin and invites him into the office to talk. Paladin present his business card and tells the superintendent that someone is going to try and kill him and offers to protect him for the right price. Travis says this already happened earlier that day when a Chinese man came to the office and attacked him with a knife. He was going to kill the man, but the sheriff arrived and arrested him instead. Paladin is preparing to leave when Travis tells him that despite what someone may have claimed, Sung was killed in an accident and there was nothing suspicious about it. As Paladin leaves, he warns Travis that the Chinese have long memories.

Survivor: Last Resort 2.5 - New Zealand Episode 5

Survivor: Last Resort 2.5 - New Zealand Episode 5
Writer: Chad Taylor

With last night’s double tribal council in mind, the tribes experience a whole new dynamic now that they know more about the other tribe.

The Maori tribe is down to six, with three obvious pairs: Rick/Bobby (Talledega Nights), Vionlia/Amanita, Sage/Kenny. The former two are in an alliance but with Mickey being gone, there is no clear target.

The Tasman tribe is at five, with a very fluid tribe dynamic: Bradley and Karin can never work together, Alexandra and Jill are inseparable, and Earl (who somehow survived) is a true lone wolf (or to think optimistically: a free agent). Karin is angry at her “alliance-mates” in Jill and Alexandra for leaving her out in the cold. She asks for an explanation from them out in front of everyone, and Jill stammers at an answer. In confessional, Earl has a big wide grin on and shrugs his shoulders. He voices his pleasure with being able to disrupt the power structure on the tribe.
This week’s immunity challenge is a Survivor classic: an eating contest of the delicacies of the wild. Specifically: there are five head-to-head rounds of seeing who can eat (and swallow) balut the quickest. Balut is a boiled bird embryo.

Kenny beats Alexandra. One point Maori.

In a close contest, Rick Bradley beats Sage, evening things up.

Rick Broller beats Karin, who refuses to eat - drawing the ire from her tribe. Maori 2, Tasman 1.

Jill beats Bobby, rather easily. Even.

Earl beats Vinolia, who really struggles with eating it. She is in tears in her confessional as she feels she let her tribe down. Tasman wins immunity!

As he has been doing for a while, Rick is insistent that they take out Kenny. They take this to Amanita and Vinolia, who are down with it - as they sense the merge can’t be far away. They debate whether Sage would be a better option but Kenny is more of a challenge threat, and taking him out would open up their own ability to win individual challenges.

Sage approaches Vinolia about her vulnerabilities this round. She says she feels like she is the target as she and Kenny have long been on the bottom. Vinolia tries to ease her worry without outright stating that Kenny is the target. She says that she thinks of herself as the top target, as she lost in the last round and thus lost the challenge for the tribe. Sage dismisses this and points out that Bobby lost his round, and at least she isn’t annoying to be around like him. Vinolia agrees with this. She says that she is frustrated at how Bobby thinks he is a mastermind and how he dismisses outside voices. And as we saw in the challenge, he can talk the talk but walking isn’t his strong suit.

After this conversation, Vinolia finds herself in a state of self-crisis. She talks this over with Amanita and they weigh their options, realizing they are swing votes. Sage talks about the conversation to Kenny, who says he gets good vibes from those two girls. Rick and Bobby, meanwhile, are already planning their future moves once the tribes merge. Afterwards, Bobby goes out to “look for firewood”. While out there, he finds a hidden immunity idol and does a victory dance. He says that this is part of the Survivor experience that he always wanted to have and now he feels like a true Survivor player. When he gets back to camp, he tells Rick about it in secret.

At Tribal Council, Jeff talks to them about the uniqueness of this middle part of the game, especially now that they know the other tribe a little bit better. Bobby talks about how it is like a big game of three-dimensional chess. As they talked about at camp, there are different traits that matter post-merge, such as athletic ability - a valuable trait when working as a tribe but dangerous when on their own. Ultimately, fielding a united front is the most important as they aren’t sure how solid the Tasman tribe are as a group. Everyone plays their cards close to their chest this Tribal. Jeff tells them it is time to vote.

After everyone votes, Jeff says if anyone has a HIdden Immunity Idol, now would be the time to play it. Bobby looks to Rick and smiles and ultimately chooses not to play his idol at this vote. Jeff says he’ll read the votes.

First vote...Bobby

….Kenny

….Bobby

…..Kenny

2 votes Bobby, 2 votes Kenny

…….Bobby.

Bobby lets out an audible “What?!”. Rick goes white.

The sixth person voted out of Survivor: Last Resort - New Zealand...Bobby. The tribe has spoken. Amanita and Vinolia do their secret handshake.

In his post-show confessional, Bobby is still in a stunned silence. After struggling for words, he says “well played”. He then apologizes to Jim Marshall for letting him down.
