November 1970. Brady Conroy (Josh Hartnett) wakes up in bed next to Celeste (Aimee Teegarden) who is still asleep. He gets up and finds his mother Colleen (Frances Conroy) in the kitchen cooking eggs and bacon. Jimmy Conroy (Lou Taylor Pucci) is asleep on the floor next to the couch. Brady asks his mother what exactly she's doing, and she tells him that it is Thanksgiving in a few days. Brady is clearly surprised by this and repeats his previous question. Colleen says that she missed her sons and since her father died she wanted to spend some time with Brady and Jimmy and Thanksgiving seemed like as good of a time as any. Brady tells her that he's going into the office, but that he'll be back later. Colleen tells him to stay until after he's eaten breakfast, and Brady begrudgingly sits at the kitchen table while Colleen serves him up eggs and bacon. She then asks him if his lady friend would like some breakfast. Brady looks confused, but Colleen tells him that she wasn't born yesterday. She knows he has a woman in his room. She's not judging, just wanting to know if she's hungry.

Brady walks into his bedroom and wakes Celeste up. He tells her that his mom wants to know if she wants breakfast. Embarrassed by the situation, Brady and Celeste both sit down at the kitchen table for breakfast. Colleen asks how they know each other, and Brady says it's complicated. Celeste says they met at the university. Colleen seems to understand the situation and doesn't ask any more questions on that matter. She tells them to eat up, breakfast is the most important meal of the day after all. Colleen then leaves the kitchen and begins the difficult task of waking Jimmy up. Brady apologizes to Celeste, but she says not to worry about it and says the food is good.

Brady enters the Rolling Stone offices, but finds it mostly dead. Kylee Hargrove (Alicia Witt) sits at the front desk. Brady goes over to her and asks where everyone is, and she says that most of the staff went out of town to spend Thanksgiving with their families. He asks her why she's still around, and she says that her family all lives in the area so there was no excuse to leave town. He tells her he was just going to edit some of his articles a bit, and she motions to all the empty desks and says there's plenty of room. Brady sits down at an empty desk and pulls some papers out of his bag. Kylee walks over to him and hands him a slip of paper. He asks what it is, and she tells him it's her address. She invites him over for some drinks later that night. Brady says that sounds nice. Kylee then says she's leaving for the day since nobody's there and hands him a key, telling him to lock up the office when he's done.

Brady shows up at Kylee's house and knocks at the door. The door is answered by Kylee's teenage daughter Angelica (Sadie Sink). She walks away from the door, leaving it open for Brady to walk in, and yells for her mom. Kylee then emerges and leads Brady out to her back patio where they sit down. Brady says he didn't know she had a kid. Kylee says why else would she work so many hours at the magazine, she has a kid to send to college soon. Kylee explains that she had Angelica when she was in high school and her boyfriend was getting ready to head over to fight in the Korean War. Brady asks if the dead is in the picture, and Kylee says he is not. She then says that Angelica is about to go out with some friends, so they can have the house to themselves.

Celeste returns to campus to find it a ghost town. She enters her dorm room and finds her roommate Kira (Katherine McNamara) packing up a bag with her brother Kyle (Kieran Culkin). Kira says that she and her brother are driving to Sacramento to their parents' hosue for Thanksgiving. Kyle asks Celeste if she's going home for the holiday. Celeste says that her parents are flying her home for Christmas, but they couldn't afford Thanksgiving as well. Kyle says she can tag along to Sacramento and spend the holiday with their family if she wants. Kira says her family is only kind of dysfunctional, but Celeste politely declines.

Brady and Kylee have sex in her house and share a joint afterward. Brady asks Kylee what they are. Kylee is confused by the question, and Brady asks Kylee if she is looking for a relationship. Kylee laughs at the question, saying that between work and raising a teenage daughter, she doesn't have time for any kind of romantic relationship. She says that Brady and her are friends with benefits. Brady asks her to elaborate, and Kylee says they are friends who will occasionally have sex without all the baggage of a relationship. Brady says that sounds good to him.

Celeste sits in her dorm room alone listening to The Doors when she hears a knock at the door. She opens it and finds Brady standing there. He hands her an envelope and tells her that his mom wanted him to invite her to have Thanksgiving Dinner with them. Celeste opens the envelope and pulls out an ornate handmade invitation card done in caligraphy. She tells Brady to tell his mom she accepts the invitation.
