After he found out he was transported in 2019, Gerald (Brendan Fraser) ran back
to the car, confusing the cashier even more. Mary (Cara Buono) is literally
screaming. He tells her to keep quiet, or else she’ll wake the kids. She lowers
her voice and squeezes her rosary, praying. She asks him where they are and he
says they’re in Montreal, but in 2019. Charles (Logan Lerman) woke up and he
asks if they’re really in 2019. Gerald doesn’t see the advantage of lying to
his children and he says he is. Charles just has to take a look outside and
look at the girls’ outfit to see they aren’t in the sixties anymore. It woke up
everyone in the car Gerald orders everyone to stay calm, he’s going to find a
solution. The panic sets in as the opening credits start rolling.
Gerald started the car and is now driving in downtown Montreal. The whole family is on panic mode, but old Horace (M. Emmet Walsh) is still asleep. Mary points out they don’t have any money on them and Gerald says he has a plan. Sarah (Odeya Rush) gets upset as her father keeps saying he has plans, but he doesn’t share them. Mary, Charles and Marco (Owen Vaccaro) agree. Mary asks her husband why are they in 2019 and he lies to them, saying he doesn’t know. Gerald orders everyone to stay silent about all of this, out of fear of being labelled as mentally crazy and internalized. His family agrees, they don’t question the man of the house’s authority. Mary suggests to go seek Gerald’s brother’s Theo’s help, he would surely understand. Gerald agrees and heads for his brother’s house.
Gerald respects all the confusing signalization as they are amazed by all the new technology. Their car and trailer is enough for everyone to turn their heads, and they don’t like the attention. They are suddenly pulled over by a cop. Mary asks Gerald if he did everything right and he says he did. She knocks on the window, her name: Gina McRae (Krysten Ritter). Gerald isn’t sure he heard it right and he asks her to repeat, her name is Gina McRae. She gives them a long stare and he asks for his licence and registration. He innocently says that he’s a police officer too, but Gina doesn’t believe it and he doesn’t have his badge on him. She said it’s illegal to not be buckled and to be six in a five-seat car. He shows her his driver’s licence, long expired and with his date of birth, making him close to one hundred years old. She quickly glances at the name and it rings a bell, but she doesn’t remember who it is. She gives it back to him and heads back to her car. Gerald looks at the traffic light in front of him. As soon as it turns red, he hits the throttle and tries to get away from the police car. Gina doesn’t risk it, thinking that retracing a 1964 Pontiac Bonneville with a vintage camping trailer won’t be that hard. She keeps thinking abut Gerald though… she saw him somewhere. In the car though… Mary is praying to stay alive and the children are excited to see their father break the law, while Horace is still asleep and before he knows it, he’s out of town.
In an old abandoned building in the middle of nowhere, a man is seen wearing a long black robe with a mysterious logo on it. His white flock of hair blowing in the wind. He’s standing up straight next a fire in a barrel. Victor (Michael Mando) comes and refers to the man as Chartwell (Clancy Brown). He tells Chartwell that Gerald is out of the picture. Chartwell turns back and looks at old newspaper articles about the fires Gerald was investigating. He grabs Victor by the head and kisses it, saying he has done a great job, but now he must do something else. He gives him an old black-and-white picture of a girl and he says he must bring her back too and it’s really important. Victor looks at the picture and he says he will do it.
We cut back to Charles in the car looking at the same picture. Sarah wonders what his girlfriend must look like now. Charles reminds her that she isn’t his girlfriend, but it doesn’t matter now. He places it back in his pocket and focuses on his parents. Mary is kissing Gerald good luck as he’s about to knock on his brother’s door. Gerald knocks on the door and a young woman answers. She stares at Gerald attentively and she mistakes him for a Jehovah witness. She’s about to close the door, but Charles comes to the rescue and blocks the door. Gerald says he’s looking for his brother Theo. The woman says Theo is dead now and they bought the house from him. She says he left a box in the house and they’ve been keeping it. She gives them the box. Charles searches through it and finds a note written for his mother Mary. He buries it in his pocket before his father sees it. Gerald thanks her and puts the box in the trailer. He says they will now head for their old house to get the T-bills he hid in the walls.
Gina McRae comes back to her home after she received a text message from her father’s Life Alert device. Ben McRae (Donald Sutherland) is confined to a wheelchair. She asks him what happened, and he said he just wanted to see her. She reminds him that although she loves him very much he can’t keep hitting his Life Alert button just to see her, she needs to be at work during the day. She turns the television on switches it to his afternoon soap opera. She tells him about her encounter with a man named Gerald something he pretended to be a cop today and he just ran off. Ben remembers Gerald and he tells her the story of his old detective Gerald disappearing. She asks if he has any pictures of Gerald and he says he may have some, but he has to stop talking now, he’s out of breath.
Gerald and Charles are staking out their old home and notice the new owners aren’t home. Charles asks what they’ll do and Gerald says he has an idea. He breaks a window and they break into the house. He heads over to the living room wall and he uses the table as a battering ram to get the T-bills out of the walls. Mary, in the car, honks to signal them to get out, the owners are here. They surprise Gerald and Charles and Gerald pushes them to the ground before leaving in a hurry. They now have their savings and a box full of Theo’s old things, but they don’t know what to do. Mary asks what they’ll do and Gerald says they’re going camping. Horace wakes up in the back and he asks if they’re in Old Orchard Beach yet, only to realise they just left the house and he falls asleep again.
