Survivor: Last Resort 2.1 - New Zealand Episode 1

On the shores of Waikato, New Zealand, two ships arrive carrying eight strangers each, the Maori and Tasman tribes. Host Jeff Probst welcomes them ashore the second season of Survivor: Last Resort. They skip the pleasantries and cut straight to the chase: in 2 minutes, they must gather their belongings and load a helicopter that will take them to their camp. However, there will only be room for seven members of each tribe so one person must make a four-hour walk to the campsite.
They all debate amongst themselves. Earl, a 47-year-old widower who is a gentleman through and through, volunteers himself to make the trek and his Tasman tribemates commend him for it. The Maori tribe is a bit more heated as different people, like Karin, say they will absolutely be taking the helicopter. It comes down to Mickey, a used car salesman, and Kenny Red Thunder, a Native American activist and part-time MMA fighter. They play rock-paper-scissors and Mickey loses, meaning he will make the walk.
While on their respective journeys, Mickey and Earl both encounter post that gives them a dilemma: get a fire-starter kit for your tribe and an extra bag of rice OR receive a hidden immunity idol. Earl, realizing the importance of the extra supplies, chooses to help out his tribe. Mickey weighs his options before taking the idol. He says that he’s a car salesman so he’ll be able to lie his way out of this.
At the Maori camp, everyone gets to know each other and start to set up shelter before Mickey has arrived. Bobby, a clean-cut 25-year-old architect, says in a confessional that he is hoping to emulate Jim Marshall’s game and win it like Jim did. As such, he goes about forming an alliance fairly quickly. He first recruits Vinolia, a student around his age. He then turns to someone older and stronger than him in Rick, who has made friends with Amanita, a 45-year-old homemaker, and asks to bring her in. In a confessional, Bobby says he is good with this four but admits that he is willing to turn his back on it on the drop of a dime.
At Tasman camp, something even bigger is forming. Jill, a 24-year-old make-up artist, is like a female Bobby and is already thinking about the game. She is arguably one of the most personable people on the tribe which helps her form bonds. Her closest is with Alexandra, a semi-famous YouTube cosplayer, as Jill has done make-up tutorials on YouTube in the past. Unlike Bobby, Jill thinks she needs to have an alliance of five, so they can have the majority until the merge. So her and Alexandra recruit Albert, a 33-year-old opera singer, and Rick Bradley (who goes by his last name), a 38-year-old fitness instructor is by-far the most-fit person on the tribe.
They set their sights on a fifth member and the options vary wildly. The most prime target is Suzanne, who is a young female like themselves. Little do they know that Suzanne has already formed an alliance with Earl, who is very likable and reminds her of her father. That then leaves Gregory, an eccentric 27-year-old film student, and Karin Svensson, an even-more-eccentric 64-year-old socialite who is in her own world. In confessional, Karin complains about the conditions and her tribemates, after having only known them or a few hours.
The first challenge is very much a team effort. Each tribe, tethered together, would race through a log chute, down a sand slide to and across the river, climb over obstacles, and sprint across the sand to the finish line. The Tasman tribe prove more balanced and come out on top. Maori is headed to the first tribal council of the season.
The Maori tribe returns to camp defeated but it is only one loss so not a big deal. Bobby is quick to rally his troops so they can discuss the votes. They talk about the dead weight that Penny is in challenges but the same could be said about Sage, who is unimpressive athletically. Amanita says that she likes Penny but Bobby keeps dominating the conversation and says that Penny would be more likely to cause them to return to tribal council in the future.
The oldest and youngest tribe-members, Penny and Sage, notice the cool-kids-clique that is being formed. They already feel like they’re being ignored so they decide to not be dormant. They approach Kenny Red Thunder, whose cold personality that isolates him as well. The three of them form an alliance called “The Outsiders” and go about trying to recruit Mickey, who seems to be an outsider.
Mickey’s journey caused him to miss a lot of gameplay and this has isolated him a bit. To the point that Bobby’s alliance is considering targeting him because he is such a wild card. However, Rick goes to talk to him about where his head is at. He doesn’t reveal the alliance but does hint at their targets. Mickey plays his cards close to his chest, which Rick finds frustrating. Afterwards, Penny swoops in and tries to recruit Mickey to vote out Bobby with her friends but this goes roughly. Mickey does not like being told what to do and tells her he’ll think about it. In confessional, he just shakes his head in anger.
In the first tribal council, Probst has all for the Maori tribe members light their torches. Fire represents your life in this game. When your fire’s gone, so are you. He asks them all how they have got acclimated to the game and there is a myriad of answers. Some of these first days are about getting used the elements and some have adapted better than others.
The topic soon becomes the alliances within the tribe and Sage is outspoken about how it feels clique-y, particularly with Bobby’s gang. This flusters Bobby, who thought that his gameplay was sly. He grows defensive of his social game and this opens up the tribal council. Penny and Kenny back up Sage as Rick and Vinolia grow confrontational about the labels being thrown around. Rick says that he thinks society has grown emotionally weaker over time and this is a prime example. Jeff tries to reel in the conversation and says that it is time to vote.
After everyone has voted, Jeff says that if anyone has a hidden immunity idol, now would be the time to play it. Despite staying silent nearly the entire council, Mickey stands up and reveals his idol and plays it. People looks surprised while he is very proud of himself. Jeff says that any votes against Mickey will not count.

…….The first person voted off of Survivor: Last Resort - New Zealand...Penny. The tribe has spoken.
In her post-show confessional, Penny says that she has all the faith in Kenny and Sage to do well in the game. They seem like some of the realest people out there and that should get them far. Of course it sucks going out so soon but she knows that her age would be detrimental to her. At least she gets to go home and spend time with her newborn grandbaby.
