Plot: August 1971. Celeste (Aimee Teegarden) is at City Lights meeting with Peter Cousins (David Costabile) and the founder of City Lights, Lawrence Ferlinghetti (Mark Hamill). They tell her that they have talked to one of their editors about working with Celeste to tidy up some of her poems for publication. Celeste asks them what's wrong with her poems currently. Ferlinghetti tries to explain that there's nothing technically wrong with them, but that an editor will be helpful when it comes to the overall structure of the publication. Nancy Peters (Anna Chlumsky) enters the room, and Cousins and Ferlinghetti tell Celeste that she'll be working with Nancy. As Cousins and Ferlinghetti prepare to leave the room, Ferlinghetti assures Celeste that she's in good hands with Nancy. Once Cousins and Ferlinghetti are gone, Nancy tells Celeste that there is a lot of work to do if City Lights are going to publish Celeste's hodgepodge, amateurish poetry.
Brady Conroy (Josh Hartnett) is sitting with his brother Jimmy (Lou Taylor Pucci) brainstorming possible ideas for more long-form stories to write. Brady doesn't like any of the ideas they've come up with so far and wants to take a break. Jimmy gets back to work developing more of his pictures from the commune. Jimmy jokes that Brady should write about the commune since that was one wild place to be. Brady makes the comment that that isn't such a bad idea. Jimmy takes down some photographs and puts them in his portfolio. He tells Brady that he managed to get an appointment with a gallery owner about displaying some of his pictures.
Celeste finds herself frustrated working with Nancy, who has taken a red pen to several of her poems, moving stuff around and changing words. Celeste finally has had enough and says that she doesn't like what Nancy is doing. Her poems are her words, not Nancy's. Nancy is pleased with Celeste's protests, saying that she's glad that Celeste is passionate about her work. Passion is the most important thing, but that her passion is not showing on the page. Celeste asks how she can fix that, and Nancy asks Celeste what her poems are actually about. Celeste struggles for an answer, and Nancy stops her, saying that's the problem. Nancy pulls out one poem, calling it her favorite, and asks Celeste about it. Celeste says she wrote it about her boyfriend Brady. Nancy asks which poems are also about him, and Celeste points out a few. Nancy suggests framing her collection around those poems about Brady, since they are the ones that feel the most passionate. Celeste nods her head.
Brady arrives at the Rolling Stone offices and talks with Kylee Hargrove (Alicia Witt) at the front desk. He asks her if Jann is available to talk, and she offers to check for him. She goes off to Jann's office, and Jann Wenner (Karl Glusman) comes out a moment later and invites Brady into his office and asks what he wants to talk about. Brady tells Jann that he may have come up with an idea for something a bit more longform. He is thinking about writing something about how his mother ended up living on a hippy commune. Jann says he likes the idea, but says that it may be a bit more personal and less cultural than pieces for Rolling Stone generally are. However, Jann offers to take a look at a first chapter of the piece when it's ready and if he doesn't want it for Rolling Stone, he will help Brady with some publishing contacts who be more interested. Brady thanks Jann for his time and leaves the office.
Jimmy is at an a photography gallery while the owner, Jennifer Albright (Melora Hardin) looks through his portfolio. Jimmy is nervous as Jennifer's face is expressionless. When she gets to the end, she closes the portfolio and looks at Jimmy for a moment. Finally she tells Jimmy that she likes his work. She finds the pictures that he took at the commune to be very sexual, probably to sexual for her to display all of them, but she definitely notices his talents at photographing the female form. Jimmy asks Jennifer if she likes his work enough to display it in her gallery. She tells him yes, that she is very interested in displaying it. In fact, she would like to have an entire show of just his work next work. She explains that they would have to an after hours event due to the adult content of his photographs.
Celeste, Brady and Jimmy all arrive back at the apartment at the same time. They are all tired from busy, productive days. Brady puts on "Our House" by Crosby, Still, Nash & Young on the record player. Jimmy sits by the window and lights up a joint. Brady sits down on the couch. Celeste sets down her things and sits down next to each other. As Graham Nash sings on the single, Brady and Celeste close their eyes and fall asleep in each other's arms on the couch.
