Hype 1.7 - What Happened

Hype - What Happened
Genre: Crime / Dark Comedy
Director: Stephen Merchant
Writer: Dominic Wilkins
Cast: Seth Green, Charles Baker, Nick Swardson, Alicia Silverstone, Daniel Stern, Daveed Diggs and Sarah Polley

Plot: David (Seth Green) and Steve (Nick Swardson) are escorted by a prison guard to the safe zone where they will meet with Sarah. They talk about how weird it is to see her there and how special it was to see Wilson at the other prison, and they were taken by surprise that he was accused of a sex crime, but anyway, he has the right profile. They sit down and Sarah (Alicia Silverstone) is brought to them. She says they should stop coming here, the guards are getting suspicious of her receiving so much visits and they won’t believe how painful by the cavity searches are and she gets one after every single one of them. David and Steve laugh awkwardly and ask her if she did anything to receive that treatment and she says she had Dennis smuggle in cell phones and pornography when he came to visit her and the guards caught on. She says they told her she had two suspicious men here to see her, so she’ll probably have one again and both David and Steve wonder what is suspicious about them. Enough chit-chat and let’s talk.

Dennis (Daniel Stern) crosses his legs and opens a newspaper, sitting in Chuck’s (Charles Baker) room at the hospital, waiting for him to wake up. He’s vulnerable, the weak link, so if he applies enough pressure, he can make him crack and reveal who snitched them out and put an end to the whole thing. Jessie (Sarah Polley) enters the room with flowers to give to Chuck. She stops dead in his tracks and closes her eyes. She says she’ll guess who he is before he tells her. She asks him if used to work with David and Chuck and he says he did. He happily closes his newspaper, as he found out she might know more than he imagined, if she knew he existed. She praises her psychic talent as Dennis compliments her. He asks her what else she knows about her boyfriend’s job and she says she doesn’t know much, except that he made a lot of money, but now it is over. Dennis says it’s a shame it is all over and he asks her if she knows he stopped and she says she doesn’t, but she starts to list everything she has bought with the money and Dennis starts to read his newspaper again, bored.

Sarah tries to get a confession out of David, but to no avail. Steve defends him anyway he can and she accuses him of being paid by David to keep his mouth shut. Clearly, he used the money, because he looks way richer than he used to. She says it’s nice to see not look like a sad-sack anymore, she likes this look on him, but frankly, he looks ridiculous with his oversized leather coat, aviator glasses and fingerless gloves. Steve says he looks cool, and Sarah says David looks like he just got out of a bondage party. David says he has heard enough and leaves with Steve. He invites him to the bar so they can have a drink and chat over it, but Steve refuses, he’ll go home to his cat and watch a cheesy movie instead, but it was great to see him. They shake hands and David says he’ll get to the bottom of this.

Jessie is still blabbing about everything she bought with their money until she gets a text from David. He asks her if she wants a drink and she tells Dennis she’ll leave. She says David was different before he spent the money, he expressed remorse and he had an ethical dilemma about what he was doing, so she’ll have a drink with him to keep him happy, because she likes him more when she’s happy. Dennis, bored to death by her constant rambling, found the last bit interesting and she tells her he can lift her there. She follows him to his van he asks her to sit at the back of his white van. She says it’s the classic white van you shouldn’t approach and she holds on to the vehicle. She says she had a vision something bad was going to happen to her today in a white van. Dennis knocks her down and ties her in the back, saying she truly has a gift.

David is at the bar with Julian (Daveed Diggs) who immediately notes he has changed. David says he cut the bad ties in his life and it left all his worries away. Julian says he looks richer now too and David says he just used his earnings in superficial things to make him feel better. Julian asks him if he found peculiar how it stopped and he asks him what he’s talking about. Julian says he made a little phone call to help. David was clearly not happy about what he was doing and what it was doing to him and he couldn’t just sit back and let his friend torture himself like that, so he made a call and now David is relieved of his worries. David can’t believe it and he starts to talk really loud. David says it wasn’t Julian’s business and he shouldn’t have called the police. David can’t believe Julian did this and leaves. Dennis, drinking in the corner, smile in satisfaction.
