Now is the time to talk about the awards season a bit. I was tasked to explain to you how the awards season will take place for Last Resort Television, as it will be a bit different from the Last Resort Films counterpart. The Golden Views extravaganza will span two full weeks. It may seem like it's too long, but we have segments planned that will hopefully make it more bearable for you guys. If everything is a success, we wouldn't mind repeating it for our second season, so we will need feedback from you guys.
Starting tomorrow, there will be one post per day, at 10 am EST, that will be titled : For Your Consideration…. Best ______. These segments will take a look at each actors and actresses that the writes have decided to put on the nominations ballot. With a plethora of characters from our various shows, we thought it would be a great idea to help you in your decisions by giving you a small description of the character they played along with a picture of the actor / actress. There will be one post per day from Monday to Saturday, with the official voting starting on Sunday. The voting will eventually close and you'll get to vote for the winners during the week with the Golden Views scheduled to take place two weeks from now, on Sunday. With that being said, here are a couple of reminders regarding the Golden Views.
There will be three nominees per category and you will be asked to choose your four favorite options per category. Here are the categories:
- Best Production Design
- Best Ensemble Cast
- Best Screenplay
- Best Guest Actor
- Best Guest Actress
- Best Supporting Actress
- Best Supporting Actor
- Best Actress
- Best Actor
- Best Showrunner
- Best Show
With the Golden Views taken care of, I want to say a few words about the 11th Golden Reels. I just want to start by thanking you for voting for me, again, for Best Original Story. It is my second win in this category and my sixth nomination, so to know that you guys enjoy my films season after season is very nice. As I predicted, the numerous films with nomination split the Golden Reels. It has become a recurring theme in recent seasons and I figure that it's going to be much harder to sweep the Golden Reels like The Prisoner did, thanks to the outstanding films our writers put out seasons after seasons.
For the winners, I was surprised by some of them and I agreed with some of them. The Best Production Design took me by surprise with Vixen taking home the gold. Blockbusters are usually nominated but fail to win, with more serious films and contenders taking home the trophy, previous winners like Cascade, Blackbird, Cape Torment and Blood Meridian all being nominated or won in the Best Picture category, so I thought that either Buried Child, or The Raven would win the gold.
I wasn't surprised by the wins of Flash Gordon and Mass Effect, both really deserving. I was also surprised to win the Best Ensemble category for the fifth freaking time, which is just insane. Malek and Bale had the star power which saw them get out on top, but I think that everybody else in that category should have won. Don't get me wrong, they were great, just not the most deserving. It was still nice to see Rami Malek win his first Golden Reel with his fifth nomination. Eric Bana took home the Best Villain award and it came as a surprise to me, because I think all of the nominees were deserving, but The Stand didn't have much momentum coming into the ceremony. Bana is a great actor and it's good to see him get recognition. The Best Picture nominees were evenly split in the writing categories with Buried Child and Suzanne in the adaptation and Newbury Street and The Raven in the Best Original Story. Buried Child picked up the win, deserving, and not much a surprise since the film had a boatload of momentum heading into the ceremony. I was fortunate enough to win my second Best Original Story award for The Raven and it means a lot to me, because most of my work is original and I take great pride in it, so for it to be recognized means a lot.
The acting categories went exactly as I planned. The story to remember out of the 11th Golden Reels is the comeback of Brendan Fraser. He didn't have it easy in the last few years and to see him walking away with the trophy was the feel-good story of the night and it was so deserving. Matt Damon also finally gets the dramatic recognition he deserves with a terrific turn in Newbury Street, a film that wouldn't have worked without him, in my opinion.
Heading into the ceremony, I thought the Best Director award would be a coin toss between Abrams and Gilroy as they both perfectly captured the tone of the film (I might be a bit biased on that one). Abrams picked up the win and I was happy for him, he deserves it.
The big winner of the night was Buried Child and it capped off a good evening with a Best Picture win. The Raven was the less Best Picture friendly film of the bunch, so I didn't like my chances there, but I was hoping for a To the Moon-type of upset, but I came up short.
Overall, I really liked how the evening went down and let's hope the Golden Views will be as good!
