Derek meets Samuel in the eating hall as the children seem to be eating oatmeal. Samuel is excited about the revival which makes Derek uncomfortable. The bell rings as it's time to go to the center. Everyone gathers around as we see Andie Quinn (Kevin Bacon) awaiting them all. He begins to talk about the community and how the strength of it brings people together. He calls everyone his family as they give him meaning to his life.
Family is all anyone has… If you don’t have a reason like it, you’re not human but an animal…” Derek watches as his father figure, Andie, gives a lesson to which he smiles almost sinisterly. He claps his hands and a group of people is brought out with bags over their heads and then kneeled down in front of them scared. “Now what would you do for your family…” Andie signals for the children to step forward. Mary-Lou brings those who are hesitant. Derek is frozen in place not responding to the person trying to bring him over. Samuel tries to convince him but Derek has none of it. Samuel then pushes Derek but Andie interrupts. Andie gives a speech about how fear is okay but it also is a great enemy. He brings Derek over to a man, who is gagged and beaten. Andie convinces Derek that fear is an enemy and then hands Derek a hammer. He whispers something into his ear and Derek stares at the man. You can hear the pleads if the man through the gag as it all intensifies until Derek finally gives in and smashes the hammer into the man's head. The hammer is hard to remove and Andie helps remove it. Everyone cheers as Derek is horrified by what has happened. Samuel then goes apeshit on his person as he looks to almost enjoy it. Derek watches with horror in his eyes as the children join in.

He puts a butcher's knife on the table which silences her.
Driver (Dan Stevens) and Herb (Bruce Campbell) are still at their standstill. Herb wants to take Driver in for questioning but Driver refuses as he has to rescue Daisy before S hurts or even kills her. Herb isn't backing down considering he knows Herb is also on the chopping block. Herb wants to bring him in which Driver is confused why. Herb blames him for all this starting and how he's a beacon for this awful shit. Driver agrees and surrenders himself but on one condition, they have to save Daisy before it's too late. Herb questions why would he trust him. The driver simply replies he isn't like S.

Andie smiles at Derek but Derek starts to see behind it all.

Driver stops him and lets the guy run off. Herb tries to fight him off but Driver's grip on his wrist is too strong. He makes him calm down. He does and then remarks how after everything Driver still tries to be the hero. He asks where did he get that from with his f-ed up attitude. Herb walks off as Driver stares plainly.
Derek waits till the dead of night to sneak off and escape Paradise. He ends up in a diner/bar as he tries to order some food with a jar of coins. The waitress is concerned with him till a woman named Malory (Sally Fields) tells her it's alright. She asks if he has somewhere to be which Derek shows how afraid he is to go back to Paradise. She looks at the boy and asks if he'd like to stay with her for the night.

She brings a stack of pancakes which he devours for he never had anything like it. Malory questions him to which gets answers half true. He ran away from home and it was becoming scary. Malory offers for him to stay but he needs to be homeschooled and do chores around the house. Derek nods his head in agreement. Malory smiles as he needs to finish breakfast to go gardening.
We see a montage of Derek with Malory as she teaches him lessons to how to fix a car, to how he gets into go-cart racing. She brings him to a smile for the first time as he becomes almost like family. He and her daughter get along as Malory smiles by the good work she's done.
She goes to adopt him but the agency says Derek doesn't exist since he would have died in a fire at the orphanage he is registered at. This makes Malory ask where did Derek run away from. Derek begins to tell her the truth till there a knock on the door.
S finally finishes his dinner as he talks about having a lovely time with her. He talks about how he sees what Derek sees in her and wonders if he didn't kill Mia how he may have liked her too. She barely can draw a breath as the pain is too much. He salutes her for fighting in her condition. He loves a fighter but unfortunately, they have to end the evening. He wipes his knife on the table clothe and gets up. He walks up to her and whispers how he'll love seeing her again soon after this is all over. For now, she needs to get Derek to him and whispers the address to her. He walks away as he tells Ammo (John Cena) and Tozawa (Lee Byung-hun) to bring her to Mia's apartment how he ordered her to be and hands Long Shot (David Boreanaz) a white rose, his calling card.
