Plot : Charles
(Adrian Rawlins) decided to take a break from experimenting and try to find a
way for his colleagues to come out of the simulation. He documented his efforts,
but he hasn’t been able to do anything about it. His morale is at an all-time
low. He keeps observing his androids and he’s forced to realise that they are
literally addicted to each other. They can’t seem to be able to spend half an
hour without falling in each other’s arms. He’s been able to keep Julia
(Michelle Fairley) and Adam (Bryan Batt) distracted from their fake life my
giving them things they enjoy and don’t necessarily have the time to enjoy in the
real world. Charles is interrupted in his work by someone knocking on the front
door. He opens it, only to find a man (Dave Franco), named Will, who says he’s here
for the clinical trial ad he saw in the newspaper.
Charles
completely forgot about the ad he posted to recruit people who were willing to
participate in his study. He asks Will questions and he asks what motivates him
to be a part of this experiment. Will says he’ll be honest with Charles,
because he seems like a good man. He’s a drug addict and the drugs are becoming
more and more expensive. The payment Charles offers his more than enough to cover
for a substantial amount of dope. Charles asks him to repeat what he just said,
and Will confirms that he’s a drug addict. Charles says he’s perfect for the role.
He makes him sign a form that states he could very well not come be able to
come back to the real world, but Will doesn’t take the time to read it. His
recent work allowed Charles to learn that he could still send people in there,
but he still has no clue how to get them how. They end their discussion and discuss
the specifics while Charles plugs Will into the machine.
Adam is
reading a book when he receives his first instructions from Charles. He gives him
and Julia the option to drive far away to someplace pleasant. They try to convince
themselves that Charles isn’t up to anything, he’s been too gentle for the past
few days. They both agree that there’s something shady about it, but they give
him the benefit of the doubt. They could always get out of there if they sense
something is wrong. They happily leave the together, allowing Charles to do
what he wants with James (Justin Theroux) and Eva (Letitia Wright). He interrupts
them having sex again and he forces them to go somewhere. They hold on to each
other, out of fear of what might happen next.
James and
Eva are in a shady part of town and Charles guides them inside an apartment building.
Will opens the door and invites them in his apartment. He offers James drugs,
but he declines, not knowing what it is. Will vents the merits of drugs and the
wonders it does for, how you feel when you take them and everything. Eva asks
James to go, she’s scared of all the filthy looking men and women laying on the
ground, passed out in their own vomit. James is still uncertain about the drugs
and Charles, watching from above, is getting impatient. He forces James to take
the drug and from watching his charts and data on the monitors, he can tell he
likes it. James suggests to Eva to give it a try, perhaps it will be good for
her and help with her anxiety. She’s a good sport and takes a dose too.
Adam and Julia
follow their GPS religiously, but they’re forced to realise that they are just driving
around the city without a clear destination. They think it’s because Charles
wanted them to be away from their home. They knew it was too good to be true. Adam
rushes back home, even if Charles tries to create traffic. They realise the
androids aren’t home. They sit in the car silently, they’ve had enough. They
say it’s time for them to go home. He doesn’t want them to leave and he’s
surely not making any efforts to get them out of here, so they’ll find a way
themselves. They leave their front lawn, trying to find the center of their
universe.
James and
Eva come back to reality. Will is crouched in a corner of the apartment, surrounded
by passed out corpses. He’s shivering from head to toe with sweat dripping down
his forehead. He’s spooked when James and Eva start moving, he’s so on edge. He
asked them if they liked that and they both say that it was a peculiar
experiment. He asks them if they want some more and James say they’re good. Will
thinks it’s weird because he feels so good when he’s high that as soon as the
feeling is over, he wants to be high again. Eva says she doesn’t feel that urge
at all. Will says that it’s time for the second round then and he takes a
syringe and he proceeds to inject drugs in himself. Two robots come in and inject
the same thing in James and Eva, before taking them to separate rooms. Will only
has the time to follow Eva before passing out on the floor.
Julia and
Adam stopped in front of a building, downtown, they suspect to be at the very
center of the city. Nobody goes in or out, which is the main reason why they
think it is suspicious because the remember from their first visit that he
really took the time to create a fully functional city. They lock their car and
decide to explore the building, but the front door is locked, furthering their suspicions.
In his laboratory, Charles struggles to find them in the city. All the traffic he
created and the back and forth between them and the androids made it impossible
for him to keep track. Adam gets Julia’s attention. He broke a window and found
his way in.
Eva wakes
up to find Will, who’s even more in distress. Before she asks him if he’s
alright, she immediately begins looking for James. Will says he’s not here, but
he notes that like him with his drugs, Eva seems addicted to him. They feel the
same when they are separated than when he’s not on drugs. Eva realises that he’s
right and Will warns her that if something ever happens to James, she could end
up like him, miserable and frail and vice versa. Eva realises he’s right and
she goes to find James and they leave the building, perplexed by recent revelations.
